Nomadland is not driven by plot. It is a film about rhythms, about the society we have crafted, about modern American life.

We dwell for a moment on what it means to come from Albany and I mention the attempts of the local Famers Market to lay claim to her success. “Why not?” she chuckles. ”I think that’s why I sing so loud is because I had to project”. It makes sense that most Farmer’s Markets don’t come equipped with a fully-fledged PA System and fold back, Carla continues reminiscing, “That was such a great place to play – everyone would give me veggies in my guitar case”.
Buoyed by two confronting and commanding performances, Little Fish is a perfect example of socially woke theatre that forces us to confront our complicity.
Many of us fall into a pattern of hibernating into our own little insular living room worlds throughout Wintertime. But who could stay in when the WA Youth Jazz Orchestra is hosting a 35th Birthday Bash?
One of the most powerful aspects of the Festival is the exposure that young kids, particularly young girls, get to a mélange of musicianship in which women are so powerfully present and heard. The access and variety to live music for the underage bracket seems to be lacking in Perth – and as much as I may begrudgingly grumble about feeling 15 years too old for the Backlot these days – the importance of Fairbridge in holding this space cannot be understated. I must admit that I got choked up as Geneve launched into a song on the representation of women in the music scene. As a kid of Fairbridge herself, she was equally stirred seeing the women get up onstage and bare their art. It feels so beautifully cyclic that she may then be that inspiring figure to someone else.
Time to pull on your wellies and dust off your tents for the annual Fairbridge festival!
‘I Am Not a Witch’ is not for the faint-hearted.
Less Light is a deeply unique theater experience.
If I had to summarise Final Portrait in a word, it would be tedious. In many ways, this is fitting for a film about an artist creating an art. That very process is cyclic, never-ending and filled with self-deprecation and doubt. But Final Portrait goes beyond being a comment on the tedium of creation and just becomes painful to watch.
"...one of my favourite parts on like this Led Zeppelin tape that Dad taped off Triple M that had bits of them coughing after they had played ‘Immigrant Song’ or something, I was like “Oh that’s so cool!” You know, when you can hear the room, the place they’re in; it makes it sound real."
Byrdon and Coogan return with their delightful blend of the comedic and the culinary. In this case, The Trip to Spain delivers precisely what we’ve come to expect from the series. Beautiful scenery, amazing food and a couple of weather beaten male comedians who flit between self-deprecation and vanity.
A Ghost Story takes a cosmic scope, but I can’t help feeling that it could have been so much pure and meant so much more if the lens was microcosmic. A study of grief and loss of love with grounding by Rooney Mara’s solar-plexus thumping performance would have been a brilliant thesis statement in its honest simplicity
We caught up with the lovely Meg Mac on a sunny winter's day in Perth to chat about baby albums, naming guitars, where we (legally) watch TV and, burgers.
With a fervent belief that true commitment to bad-taste transforms it into something fashionable, fun and infectious, Kirin is a lot to take in.
RTR FM's In The Pines is the kind of festival where you can bring along a picnic blanket and a quaint cheeseboard and laze for the early afternoon before rousing to dance around for a bit. The 24th edition stood as a wonderful continuation of what has become a ritualistic showcase of our diverse and flourishing local music scene.
Fairbridge is such a well-organised festival. There is room to breathe, there’s a chance to catch acts in numerous settings due to the ingenious multiple-set programming. It is without doubt, my favourite multi-day festival in WA.
Jazz is a pretty large umbrella term and I suppose the instrumentation and the fact that we improvise pushes us towards that realm. We think of our music more as improvisation based beat music.
Usually, Little Dragon’s version of pop is so smooth. But Season High is full of more misses than hits, and for that I’m led to believe that this album is for new listeners, not old fans.
Fairbridge Festival is a symbiotic cacophony of world/folk/blues/roots/dance/country and every sound in between... and it is less than two weeks away!
There is no denying it, Tinder is weird. It is a rapid-fire environment of skin-deep swiping. But, humans are weirder. Tinder is merely a tool; it's utility is entirely dependent on the tool-wielder. If you're looking for a screw with a hammer in-hand, you probably won't nail it.
