REVIEW: AGWA'S ELECTRIC DREAMY ART BALL

On Saturday night, Perth’s hottest and wildest annual event shined brighter than previous years with exceptional entertainment and a creative unity. The 2019 Art Ball was an explosion of the weird and wonderful, bringing together Perth’s art scene under one, beautifully dressed AGWA roof.

The glittering event wasn’t short of local musical talent. Armed with a slew of disco inspired tracks, the excellent DJ Aslan kicked off the night, setting the tone for the terrifically fun event. Shortly after, we were treated to a stunning song and dance act (pictured below) that gave the audience it’s first taste of the eccentric evening that was only just commencing.

San Cisco delivered a pitch perfect performance as usual, with the band members themselves dressing accordingly (e.g. drummer Scarlett’s gold ensemble). Performing a range of songs from their catalogue, the band were the right amount of fun, quirky pop that fit perfectly into the night’s atmosphere.

In between the exuberant musical acts, the entertainment continued with many provocative and avant-garde performances from a range of Perth’s weirdest and most wonderful artists. Gendermess were one of the stand-outs, giving the audience multiple short performances that combined dance with theatrics. Even though the entertainment mostly gathered around the main stage, there were numerous seperate rooms leading off hallways like magical secret gardens full of light displays and adult-size ball pits.

Food and drink was aplenty, with round the clock champagne and small eats offered. However, it was when you crept past all of the glitter and sequins that you found the piece de resistance in the form of quite possibly one of the biggest grazing tables I have ever seen. Fresh cheeses and meats were spread across the seemingly huge table, with a server carving fresh ham for guests.

One thing that was impeccable, other than the food, was the service itself. The staff at Art Ball could not do enough for everyone, proving that the organisers wanted every aspect of art ball to be a class act. A somewhat arguably pricey event, Art Ball had high expectations to live up to; expectations they most definitely succeeded.
